das möbel > das geschäft
‘What we want from the ideal piece of furniture: It is homemade, tells a story, has personality and isn’t just functional – in the eye of the user. It is tangible and usable with all our senses, by virtue of high-quality materials and manufacture. It fits the person who chooses it.’ Lothar Trierenberg and his team at Gumpendorfer Straße 11 in Wien-Mariahilf (Vienna) have chosen a business philosophy that reflects a relaxed atmosphere and cooperation between designers and customers for the purpose of producing custom-made solutions for living. They focus on individual furnishing with a matching quality-price ratio.

300 m2 on three floors cater to the interests of potential buyers since 2006 – in addition to Vienna’s best-known design living room, das möbel > das café. das möbel > das geschäft is both show-place and a venue for creativity. Contemporary ideas for new living spaces emerge (and stand) here. Lamps, chairs, tables, shelves, beds, sofas and home accessories from numerous European manufacturers are presented here in rotation. Main focus: Design from Austria.

‘Direct contact between designers, craftsmen and -women as well as architects and customers is important to us. We know both sides and see ourselves as facilitators. Out of this interaction arise smart and personal solutions regarding style, functionality and price’, explains Lothar Trierenberg. Accordingly, service and product range is extensive: From practical tips for the specific search for suitable furniture – including special requests – through to the complete room planning for apartment, house, garden and office.

das möbel > das café
Das Möbel has been an interface between design and home atmosphere not just since 2006. As early as 1998, Lothar Trierenberg and Margreta Schieszwohl – together with Markus Luger and Justus Lück – opened up the first usable (design-)sale-exhibition space as a café at Burggasse 10 in Wien-Neubau (Vienna). das möbel > das café convinced with a style that had been unheard of in Vienna up to this point. The interior – or part of it, fresh-surprising design – could be purchased just as well as traditional Viennese coffee (mélange) and apple strudel.

The Career changers’ concept was successful. das möbel > das café became Vienna’s best-known living room. Treated in the beginning as a quaint hot spot, it is by now firmly anchored in the city as a well-established institution. And so, more and more young designers seek out its public space for a real-world test of their products; and more and more people who are conscious about how they live and dwell get a taste here for ‘furniture with character and hi/story’ – without (shopping) stress. They take a look at the furniture. They try it out. In this public living room, exchange will continue in the future. Not only through re-furnishing on a regular basis, but also through dialogue.

In the last years, das möbel > das café has set the stage for das möbel > das geschäft. The concept of design is no longer automatically equated with fashion trends and costly prettification of living spaces, but stands for furniture-creations that connect with their users in form and function on a daily basis.
